Learn Malayalam Online

Dear All,

The language Malayalam is slowing fading off. I feel it is the responsibility of each Malayalee parents/parent to educate or use the language to their children. Children can always learn English in schools but no one except for the parents or grandparents can teach them their mother tounge.

So PLEASE TALK TO YOUR KIDS IN MALAYALAM before we all forget the language.

Please click to this website to learn Malayalam. Don't forget to switch on the speaker. Listen, use and write in Mlayalam. All the best .... Endhaa Malayalam samsarikan arinnya...

Onasadya

Onasadhya is the most delicious part of the grand festival called Onam. It is considered to be the most elaborate and grand meal prepared by any civilisation or cultures in the world. It's a feast which by brothers, sister and myself waits every Onam.

Rice is the essential ingredient of this Nine Course Strictly Vegetarian Meals. All together there are 11 essential dishes which have to prepared for Onasadya. Number of dishes may at times also go upto 13. Onasadya is so elaborate a meal that it is called meals, even though it is consumed in one sitting. Onasadya is consumed with hands, there is no concept of spoon or forks here.

There is a distinct order of serving the the grand feast of Onam. Pappad or Pappadum is to be served on the extreme left. On top of the big pappadum banana is served. The banana can be 'Rasakadali', 'Poovan', 'Palayankodan'. From the right pappad - salt, banana wafers, sarkarapuratti fries are served. After this, ginger lime and mango pickles are served. Next comes 'vellarika', 'pavakka', beetroot and 'ullikitchadi'. 'Kitchadi' made of pineapple and banana splits or of grapes and apple is served along with this. On the right, 'cabbage thoran' is served. Then comes a thoran made of beans and avil followed by bread and green peas mix 'thoran'. The meal will be complete with the 'avial' and 'kootu curry'.Rice is served when the guests seat themselves and just two big spoons is considered enough. After this 'parippu' and ghee is poured. Then comes Sambhar. Desserts are to begin with adaprathaman followed by 'Kadala Payasam'. This colourful arrangement on the lush green banana leaf makes the food look even more tempting and irresistible .

Attapoo Competition

'Pookhalam' consists of two words, 'poov' meaning flower and 'kalam' means colour sketches on the ground. It is considered auspicious to prepare Pookalam, also known as 'Aththa-Poo' during the festival of Onam.

See how our 3 groups of ladies dedicated in completing their Attapoo. The younger group came up with a theme " Vallamkali" meaning Water Game or Boat Race. The other 2 groups uses flower theme (traditional). And the winner goes to.......... the younger group with their new and creative theme. But I must say that I love all the 3 Attapoo on that day. Thanks to them the hall looks beautiful that day.

Onam Celebration and Onasadhya 2006

This year Thiru Onam falls on the 5th September 2006. I'm sure most of the Malayalee families would have celebrated it with their family with joy. Here at Kajang, Hulu Langat District, the Hulu Langat Malayalee Sanghadana (HLMS) celebrated it with our community around this district. About 200 people attended this function that we call Onam Celebration and Onasadhya 2006.

We started with the Attapoo Competition by 3 groups of ladies. Each group consist of 5 people. The creativity and dedication of each team is clearly shown as the preparation is done much earlier. I like the new design by the younger group. Good work girls.

Then we also had colouring competition for children below 7 years old. Followed by Blind Folded game for the children between 7- 12 years with their parent. As for the teenagers, dressing compettition with old newspaper was very interesting. It's nice to see the younger generation come forward and participate in cultural festivals.

The game then continues with Couple game where the couples were ask similar questions. This game would have given the opportunity for them to know each other better. At least they will now notice each others likings and dislikes.

The final game was Adults Open and we had 3 groups of 15 people in each team. A message in Malayalam was passed down the line and as usual we will get diffirent answer from one end to the other end. Well, this shows how important listening skills is in an effective communication.

Every participants received gifts and there were lucky draws too. Wow! gift, gift and gift....

During the lunch hour, Onasadhya were served by the committee members. Banana leaf and 10 types of Kerala dishes including Ollan, Thoran, Kaalan, Parruppu and Ghee, Sambar, Upperi, Prataman, Pappadam and lots more... Yummy! Yummy!

Everybody who came that day, returned home with satisfaction and we hope to meet in another celebration to keep the Malayalee community close.

Wishing All Onam Ashamsakal

Till next time, signing off,

Renu
